Ruben In RipZinger!
Posted by: Alex | Wednesday, October 29, 2008Ruben got a package...
It was a super cool surprise when I found this book in the mail coming from Japan...

This photographer was doing a tour in CA to edit this skate culture book. He started riding bmx and knew me very well. By coincidence, he was there visiting and got to shoot this picture while I was shooting for Grounded... and he used it for his book!

I'm very stoked about it. People like the skater Rick McCrank are in this book; it's all about traveling in a skate culture atsmosphere and he put a picture of me riding! It's so crazy! He says that lots of people have cool things to say about it. I think it is one the best career souvenirs that I have. Stussy made this book and you can find more info on the book at the site Stussy.com. Also there's a little video explaining the project ...
I think books like this are really cool ... etnies should do one too! Will be awesome!
Talk to you soon!

BK Says...

Boo!
Here are some photos from a recent pumpkin carving party we had when A. Ross and D. Parrick were visiting Chicago.

Aaron's pumpkin wins style points by adding an "E" logo to the back of his smiling jack o' latern.

Parrick's was the scariest. Steve's was the most creative. Suzi won best improv with the imperfect pumpkin (aka: damaged canvas). Porter's was the devil's spawn. Mine had a uni-brow, a snaggle tooth and one ear (my signature since I'm the Van Gogh of pumpkin carving) or did Mike Tyson get a hold of my pumpkin? Do our pumpkins resemble ourselves? You be the judge....
Redbull Trick or Treat in Rochester was fun as well with Aaron, Myself and KC Badger. Hamlin was there as well but he was riding the course too fast to catch up with him for a picture. Happy Halloween Everyone!

Mason Wins Oakley Pro Jr.!
Posted by: Brink | Monday, October 27, 2008
SANTA CRUZ, California (Sunday, October 26, 2008) – Mason Ho (North Shore, HI), 20, won the Oakley Pro Junior ASP North America Championships, an ASP Grade-3 event, in four-to-six foot (2 metre) surf at Santa Cruz’s coveted Steamer Lane this afternoon by posting the highest heat total of the event, a near perfect 19.10 out of a possible 20, leaving fellow finalists Jayke Sharp (Coffs Harbor, AUS), 19, Fisher Heverly (Emerald Isle, NC), 17, and Bruno Rodrigues (Huntington Beach, CA), 20, in a combination situation.
All ASP North America Pro Junior competitors have been working throughout the year to compile their best six results out of the 10 events on the series in hopes to earn a top five position overall. The top five surfers earn a berth into the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships. This year’s top five surfers Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA), 19, who claimed the ASP North America Pro Junior title, Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA), 15, Travis Beckmann (Vero Beach, FL), 20, and Blake Jones (Melbourne, FL), 20, will represent North America against the world’s finest junior competitors in Narrabeen, Australia, where each surfer will have a chance to claim the title of ASP World Junior Champion.
Ho proved to be the Oakley Pro Junior competitor to beat, jumping out to an early lead in the pumping Steamer Lane surf. The young Hawaiian earned the top honors with an explosive variety of maneuvers, earning a near perfect score.
“It just feels good to know that hard work pays off,” Ho said. “The reward is great and it’s just cool to win one.”
Ho was thrilled to claim a win in the excellent surf. Despite the cold water, Ho felt right at home at Steamer Lane, stating that the Lane reminded him of Sunset, his home break in Hawaii.
“My Uncle helped me with my heats and my board was just really good,” Ho said. “My board is pretty beat up, but the waves were just so good. It kind of reminds me of my home break, Sunset. It’s so sick. I’m so stoked.”
Sharp proved why he is rated fourth on the ASP Australasia Pro Junior series with an impressive performance at this year’s Oakley Pro Junior ASP North America Championships. Sharp was one to watch throughout the event, but could not top the near-flawless performance displayed by Ho.
“It’s good to come over here and see how I do,” Sharp said. “I just got a little bit stuck out there and got caught up in the hassling and I didn’t really get any good waves, but good job to Mason.”
Although Sharp’s result does not affect the ASP Pro Junior ratings, Sharp will surf against the top North Americans in this year’s Billabong ASP World Junior Championships. The regular-footer made a visit to the states, stamping a lasting impression on his fellow competitor’s minds with his performance here at Santa Cruz.
“I’m looking forward to World’s,” Sharp said. “I’m hoping that Mason (Ho) can qualify through Hawaii so that we can have a rematch.
Rodrigues needed to win the event in order to qualify for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships, but could not advance past the amazing surfing by Ho and finished in third. Pagan, who also was a standout in the event finished in a respectable fourth place overall.
Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 20, who did not compete in the Oakley Pro Junior ASP North America Championships, will accompany the top five ASP North America Pro Junior surfers in Narrabeen via the ASP WQS. Gudauskas was the top ASP WQS competitor of junior age from America, earning him a berth into the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships again this year.
The contest also marks the last of three events held in the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series (an ASP North America Specialty Series), which offers an additional $10,000 prize purse to its top three finishers. Sebastian Zietz (Kilauea, HI), 20, claimed the top honors in this year’s series despite his equal 25th place finish at Steamer Lane. Zietz won the Oakley Pro Junior at Lower Trestles and placed seventh at the Oakley Pro Junior in Newport Beach, which proved enough to claim the added prize purse for the junior division.
“Being down here today at the contest, I knew there was a rare chance for me to win the Trifecta,” Zietz said. “Everybody who needed to win just one more heat ended up losing and I just got really lucky. I’m super stoked though, party tonight.”
Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 17, pocketed second place on the Macy’s CA Trifecta and Fisher Heverly snagged a third after finishing equal fifth in Santa Cruz.
This event marks the Final contest on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series and the top six surfers mentioned above will surf in January in Narrabeen, Australia against the world’s best junior competitors.
For additional ASP information visit ASP World Tour or ASP North America.

Evelien's LA Trip
Posted by: Alex | Tuesday, October 21, 2008We imported Evelien... from Belgium to LA for last month's GvR of Skate. We even got her to write a travel journal entry, photos and all, to take us through each day of her trip. Check it out... and don't forget to enter the etnies & Evelien Giveaway!
Destination: LOS ANGELES - CALIFORNIA
Start date of trip: 1st of October – 10th OF October
Traveling companions: AXEL CRUYSBERGHS and his mom, OLI BOURGIN etnies Europe team manager
Goal of trip: GVR 08 and Hang Outs

Day 1

We all got up early to get to the airport on time. It was raining all morning and I was afraid that our flight would be delayed or canceled. But everything went as planned and we sure were hyped to go to LA.
I’m sure I’m one of the biggest dorks on this planet (pictures prove it all), but still I guess I’m livin my life the way I want and being silly makes me have lots of fun.
Anyways we were flying with Swiss Air and I’ve never flown with them to a far destination. I’ve gotta say that it was a really pleasant flight. I did have Axel with me and he’s lots of fun and an awesome skater.
We played Tetris on our lil tv screen cuz we could play against each other while sittin in our own seats. It was hilarious.

Also, we were bored of sitting down and chilled in the back of the plane... dancing, laughing and, I think, being loud. Some of the passengers were giving us weird faces! At this one time I was chillin' in my seat and Axel came by. He was leaning on the seat of another passenger and he wanted to put his arm on it again and was leaning on the passengers head! I’ve gotta say that was one of the most funny things I’ve ever seen. We were laughing for a whole while cuz it was soooooooooo funny. Hahaha. Yeah the passengers hated us. At least we had fun!
We tried to take naps in between and watch movies when we felt like it. I watched the Indiana Jones movie and I liked it. Good looking people are always nice to look at. I also watched a movie called the Son of Rambow about these kids that are making a video and doing crazy stuff like jump outta trees and roll down hills. It was pretty nice as well.

After a while I couldn’t wait to get out of the plane. It makes me stress out and I have to control myself. Hehe. We had two more hours to go and I was stoked that we were close. I thought to myself to take more sleepy time and hoped when I woke up that we would be there already.

When we arrived, a friend of mine was gonna pick me up because I was gonna stay at her house. So I left Axel, his mom and Oli behind; hey had a ride with someone else. The first day jet lag was kickin' in and I passed out a lil after I got to my friend's house.
Second day, I think I woke up pretty early and I was a lazy ass for a while. Couldn’t really function properly because jet lag can be a bee-otch sometimes. Watched tv, took naps and at night we went to a party and I got in! But shhhht don’t tell anyone. Haha.
The day after that I felt hungover, and didn’t do a lot either, just get on LA track and chill. By the way, it was really hot outside, and I'm not used to it. I’m hella white and I burn fast but don’t really get a tan. Too bad… haha.
On Friday, I drove with Vanessa to Ryan Dewitt’s (Element Team Manager) forest crib and stayed over so we could drive to Lake Forest in the morning.
I finally had a good night of sleep and woke up with gross stuff in my eyes. I was wondering what it was... and it was PINK EYE!!!!
I never had it before but it is grossss and everybody that would come in my area would get it. We went to the contest and I tried to get some practice in with no food in my stomach. I felt like skating was goin' pretty good. But when the contest started I felt soooo bad… sooo sick (I should have eaten something). The thing that sucked is I had to skate first in the first heat. So the contest started... first trick I do, I roll my ankle. But didn’t really care and skated. Yeah, it didn’t go that well… probably worse contest that I skated EVER. Anyways don’t let me ruin your vibes. The music was weird but I dance whenever I feel like it. I did feel bad that I didn’t do that well, because I really wanted to do good. Disappointed myself but life goes on, right?
The rest of my trip I got to hang out with Vanessa Torres, my other friends and met cool new people. I enjoyed LA so much that I decided that I am going to go back for two months. I’m going for vacation and to try to focus on my skating more... shooting pictures and getting some footage done.
Anyways that was my trip! Hope you liked my story!
Ryan Carlson's Monster Manuever
Posted by: Alex | Tuesday, October 21, 2008etnies Ryan Carlson is officially one of the best “aerialist” surfers in the world. This single wave filmed this past summer earned him $5,000 and the title for FREEWAVE’s Monster Maneuver!
NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- (October 20, 2008) -- Out of all the waves ridden by all the surfers along all the coastlines of the Mainland USA this summer, only one could produce the single best move in the Billabong Freewave Challenge. Today the winner of the Monster Maneuver Award was revealed to be Ryan Carlson of Huntington Beach, California for his extraordinary 540 Rodeo Flip. Carlson earned $5,000 for pulling off the astonishing aerial trick (which consists of a backside flip combined with one-and-a-half body rotations) at Huntington on July 22, 2008. The ride was captured on video by Paul Cerone/DSG and uploaded to the Freewave Challenge site where it became the most-viewed clip of the year. Cerone receives $1,200 for documenting the move. Sheckler 3rd in Dew Tour!
Posted by: Alex | Monday, October 20, 2008Ryan Sheckler didn't make the podium this weekend in Orlando, but he still has reason to celebrate thanks to finishing 3rd in the AST Dew Tour '08 overall standings. No, he didn't win what woulda been his 4th Cup in a row, but Chaz Ortiz sure skated his little heart out and Sheckler had nothing but love for him. Isn't that nice? Admit it.
Sally Wins The World Title!
Posted by: Alex | Monday, October 20, 2008Sally Fitzgibbons won the Open Women's World Title at the ISA World Surfing Games Costa de Caparica, Portugal yesterday, capping off a wonderful year of results. She made the final, winning all her heats along the way. Sally started the final slowly, patiently waiting 12 minutes for the right wave, scoring an 8.9 and then following it up with an 8.2 point ride shortly after. Sal carried this lead to the finish with Marie Dejean (France) in 2nd, Camila Cassia (Brazil) 3rd and Lauren Sweeney (USA) 4th.
Congratulations, Sally!

Bestwick Holdin' On
Posted by: Alex | Friday, October 17, 2008Jamie Bestwick heads to this weekend's Dew Tour stop in 1st place. Orlando is the fifth and final stop of the season and Jamie's lead is small, but a lead nonetheless. Current second place points holder Chad Kagy will try to come between Jamie and his fourth Dew Cup, but I've got it on good authority that Jamie's not letting up. Stand by for updates on Jamie and the rest of the Dew Tour drama...

A Note From Adam Baker
Posted by: Alex | Thursday, October 16, 2008Adam Baker's feeling the pressure...
With less then a month to go for the deadline for the new S and M video “I want to Live,” the pressure is on. This last weekend I took a trip to Tucson with high hopes of finding some amazing stuff. The first day was a mess spending more time fixing flats and walking my bike then anything. That night was nice; one of my favorite bands, The Swim, was playing, so seeing them took the edge off the day. The next day was better. Found a fun wall ride and a crazy ledge.

Keep an eye out for “I want to Live”... it should be out in December and I am sure that Stricker will have a crazy part.
Have fun out there!

I've been hurt due to an ankle injury for the past month, so I haven't been doin' much but watching old bike vids and eating fast food. But I should be back on my bike soon and I cant wait. Here's a photo my buddy Rick snaped before I rolled my ankle.

And one of me and my new gas saver with a bike rack (SWEET!).

'Til next time, peace.

Malto & Lango Rip DTSD!
Posted by: Brink | Sunday, October 12, 2008
- Malto blesses us with a proper nosegrind
Sean Malto and Andrew Langi ripped the Downtown Showdown in Los Angeles earlier today. Sean took second in the Black Label Dive Bar obstacle. Andrew was just getting warmed up on the same thing when he took a nasty slam to the knee that had him sidelined for a while, but he came back strong later in the day. No placing for Andrew but he got some honorable mentions for sure. Not only that, thanks to Malto and Langi ripping, with a little help from their teammate Rick McCrank, Girl ended up in second place overall! You know who got first? Ronnie Creager's Blind crew did. Congrats, boys! More sequences and video to come, so stay tuned.

- Langi with a smith before the slam...

- "Owwwww!"

- "This suuuuuucks!"
